Their study, which is published in a recent issue of the journal Oncogene, shows that a protein called Nanong promotes the growth of cancer stem cells in head and neck cancer. This is good news for head and cancer patients as the findings could lead to designing novel targeted drugs that might improve the treatment of the disease.  

Stuart was diagnosed with tongue cancer in May 2012 after suffering with a number of symptoms for a year which four of the doctors he consulted failed to diagnose as cancer. His dentist also failed to pick up on his condition.

The Oscar-winning Hollywood actor was diagnosed with stage four of the disease after a walnut-sized tumour was found on his tongue.  He fought a six month battle with the disease from August 2010 until January 2011 undergoing an intense course of chemotherapy and radiation.
